When does Springfield's holiday season actually start? The official answer is 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 27, the day after Thanksgiving, when Holiday in the City opens with the Grand Illumination downtown. The calendar gets crowded a week later. Between Thursday, Dec. 3 and Saturday, Dec. 5, the park district, a hometown musician and the Clark State Performing Arts Center all have something scheduled. On Saturday night, two 8 p.m. shows go up on South Fountain Avenue at the same time.
If you're planning December now, start with that first weekend and fit Thanksgiving weekend around it.

Nov. 27 Sets the Stage, and the Details Come Later
Visit Greater Springfield is hosting this year's Grand Illumination. Its 2026 listing promises Santa's arrival parade, food trucks, a fireworks-and-drone show, and the downtown outdoor ice rink back for its sixth year. The listing says the full lineup for Nov. 27 is still to come. For now, the start time is the one firm detail.
Last year's event shows what to expect. In 2025, the Springfield News-Sun reported that the city tree was lit at the Springfield esplanade on South Fountain Avenue between Columbia and High streets, and that admission was free. The 2025 night ran on a schedule: Santa's parade at 6 p.m., the illumination at 6:30 p.m. and fireworks with the drone show at 7 p.m. Those were last year's times. Treat them as a rough guide until the 2026 lineup comes out.
The rink works the same way. In 2025 it sat at City Hall Plaza, 76 E. High St. It was open 5 to 8 p.m. Thursdays, 5 to 9 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays through Jan. 4, and admission with skate rental was $5 a person. In that 2025 article, Greater Springfield Partnership downtown events programmer Kristina Jarrell told the News-Sun, "People love that the ice rink is outside, which is not common for a city our size." The 2026 location, hours and price have not been announced, so check them before you bring skates.
Friday at Snyder Park Gets the Weekend Started
The National Trail Parks and Recreation District runs two events at the Snyder Park Clubhouse that week. Both come before the downtown shows. The district's event pages give the weekday and date without a year. Thursday, Dec. 3 and Friday, Dec. 4 match the 2026 calendar, but check the district's site before you go.
On Thursday, Dec. 3, from 4 to 7 p.m., Furry Family Photos costs $15. That includes three emailed photos, and the district recommends signing up ahead of time. If you want a holiday card photo with your dog in it, this is the session.
On Friday, Dec. 4, from 5 to 8 p.m., the Yuletide Celebration is free and open to all ages. The district lists holiday music, hot chocolate, roasted marshmallows, some shopping, holiday displays, a visit with Santa and photo spots around the clubhouse. The district's own description calls it a way to "start off the festive weekend," which is how it fits on the calendar. It's free, it's over by 8 p.m., and it leaves Saturday open.
Saturday, Dec. 5 Puts Two 8 p.m. Shows on South Fountain Avenue
On Saturday night, the north and south ends of downtown's arts corridor both have an 8 p.m. curtain.
At The State Theater, 19 S. Fountain Ave., Griffin House plays his "Home Town Show." Doors open at 7 p.m., and tickets are $15 general admission in advance, $20 day of, or $30 VIP. The News-Sun called House a Springfield native when it previewed his 2025 holiday concert at the same theater. For 2026, the theater has listed one December date for him.
At Kuss Auditorium, 300 S. Fountain Ave., the Clark State Performing Arts Center and the Springfield Arts Council co-present Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol." Tickets are $23 to $45 through the Performing Arts Center ticket office at 300 S. Fountain Ave., by phone at 937-328-3874, or online through Clark State. Kuss seats 1,500, and the Clark State season announcement lists this as the center's only December production.
Because both shows start at 8 p.m., a household that wants both has to split up or pick one. A few ways to plan the night:
- Buy State Theater tickets early. The $15 advance price goes up to $20 on the day of the show, so waiting costs $5 a ticket.
- Pick by who's going. A Dickens adaptation in a large auditorium suits a group with kids or grandparents. A hometown songwriter in a historic theater suits a night out with friends.
- Plan your parking around the address. The theater is in the 19 block of South Fountain and the auditorium is in the 300 block, so park near the venue you're going to.
- Make Friday the family night. The free Yuletide Celebration at Snyder Park ends at 8 p.m. the night before, so families can do the park on Friday and a show on Saturday.
One Less Stop on South Fountain This Year
There's one change downtown. In 2025, Holiday in the City paired animated classics with holiday features at the State Theater and at Myers Market, 101 S. Fountain Ave. Since then, the Springfield News-Sun has reported that all of the Myers Market food vendors closed, that COhatch is shifting the space toward private events, and that from Sept. 1 the building is open only to COhatch members and their guests. No new venue has been named for the movie nights that used to be held there.
That puts more of December on the venues that are still open to the public on South Fountain. The State Theater has two dated December shows. Further south is Kuss. Between them is the Heritage Center of Clark County at 117 S. Fountain Ave. In 2025, the Enchanted Forest there, with lights and decorated trees, hosted Santa in the second-floor Hellmuth Rotating Gallery on Saturdays in December and on two Thursdays. Those were the 2025 dates, and the 2026 schedule hasn't been posted.
The same goes for Holidays at the Hatch, the shopping weekends held at Hatch Artist Studios, 105 N. Center St., on four December dates in 2025. If it returns, it will probably add another stop to a downtown December weekend, but there are no 2026 dates yet.
Later in December, and This Weekend
The State Theater's other dated holiday show is Saturday, Dec. 19: Bluegrass Christmas with The David Mayfield Parade and Jenny & The Streetwalkers. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m., with tickets at $20 in advance or $25 day of. It's the last weekend before Christmas and the only other big December night at the theater so far.
You also don't have to wait for Thanksgiving to see a show at Kuss. The Clark State Theatre Arts Program and the Springfield Arts Council close "Peter and the Starcatcher" at 8 p.m. on Nov. 6 and 7, with a 2 p.m. matinee on Nov. 8. Tickets are $18, or $15 for seniors. The Club Kuss series opens Nov. 6 at 7:30 p.m. with singer-songwriter-pianist Tabitha Meeks, with tickets at $23, or $13 for students with a valid ID.
For the rest of December, the dates to watch for are the full Grand Illumination lineup and the rink details from Visit Greater Springfield. The first weekend of December is already scheduled.
